The Day of Valor

The Day of Valor, also known as Araw ng Kagitingan, honors the bravery of Filipinos and American soldiers during World War II when the Philippines was invaded by the Japanese. With this year's theme, "Kagitingan ay Gawing Gabay, Pandemya ay Mapagtatagumpayan," the celebration also serves as a reminder that, just as our Filipino veterans defended our country during the war, we can resolve our ongoing fight against COVID-19 through sheer courage and determination.

Several promotional activities are held in time for the celebration. There are series of virtual commemorative events held like the Sunrise Wreath-Laying Ceremony on 5 April at 8:00 am. A Tribute to All Filipino Heroes was held on 7 April at 9:00 am to honor all Filipino heroes, patriots, martyrs, and defenders who fought and died for the country’s freedom. On the actual day of the observance of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) last April 9 at 8:00 am, there was a virtual gathering through Facebook Live at the Dambana ng Kagitingan or the Shrine of Valor. This tradition is held to look back and pay tribute to the heroism and sacrifices of the Filipino and American veterans of World War II. There are also different  competitions by the Department of Education that aims to promote the heroism of Filipino veterans and the lessons from their life stories during the war, and how they could inspire us during this time of crisis.

Although the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and community quarantine prevent us from physically gathering, we will continue to commemorate the 79th Araw ng Kagitingan and the 2021 Philippine Veterans Week. Let this year's national commemoration serve as a reminder of our veterans' valor, and may their stories of courage and bravery inspire us and guide us in fighting the covid-19 pandemic.
