Binatbatan Festival 2021 Celebration
According to Damaso King, a well-known Vigan historian, the Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts, which runs from the last week of April to the first week of May, was originally the Feast of the Natives, which began on May 3, 1883. Former Mayor Eva S. Medina maintained the group's work to promote Vigan in 1995, giving birth to the Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts. Binatbatan Festival, however, was established in 2002 to honor one of the enterprises that kept inhabitants alive: abel Iloco hand-loom weaving.
Binatbatan is the method of removing the seeds from cotton pods by beating them. The event was commemorated publicly on the municipal government's official Facebook Page, with various city employees and media representatives in attendance, all of whom followed the covid-19 fundamental health rules. Followed by a Misa Concelebrada at Simbaan a Bassit. Because of the pandemic, the traditional commemoration of the event was altered. To control the spread of the virus, there is no street dancing competition. However, different competitions are still held. Bigueños showcased their creativity through the traditional Abel House Decoration in Calle Crisologo. There was also an On-the-Spot Photography Competition where they captured different products and places of Vigan City.
The purpose of the said event is to raise awareness of the ancient town's importance in order to increase resolve to conserve and protect it, as well as to maintain the attractiveness of the northern region's tourism industry, which attracts tens of thousands of local and international tourists looking for a "northern experience." We still celebrated the festival cheerfully despite the pandemic. We shouldn't forget why we are celebrating the ViVa Vigan Binatbatan Festival.
